most likely it's a valve cover gasket. not hard at all to change.

if you buy a cork one clean the valve cover with a rag, and some carb cleaner, then silicone the gasket to the cover, clean the head surface and install. if you get a rubber one clean the valve cover, and head realy good and don't use the silicone. the only trick is to not over tighten.

check the oil first thing in the morning. when the engine is running oil can sling up the dipstick tube just from the crank turning. so having it kinda read high up after the engine has been running is normal.

usualy if you whipe it off, and then take another reading you will get a pritty close reading.

I was assuming he meant on the outside of the dipstick

yea i ment the dipstick tube itself. its always covered. someone at an auto center where i got my inspection said the thing about the gaskets. he said to pull the pan out and replace em...also is there a real good reason that the oil pressure is low. other than the fact its 29 yrs old

Are you getting the oil pressure readings from an aftermarket gauge? The factory gauge is notoriously inaccurate. I'd say 15 or above at warm idle is fine and 6-10psi per 1000rpm is normal over idle. As for what the "tech" said, sounds like he may not know what he is talking about. If there is oil on the dipstick tube it's not likely an oil pan gasket. Remember that liquids follow the path of least resistance, which is generally down. That added with wind from driving could cause the oil to go toward the rear of the engine. If oil is on the dipstick it could be a few things. Blow by causing oil vapors to come out the dipstick tube itself, valve cover gasket leaking onto it, or the least likely could be deteriorated dipstick o-rings at the block. But that's not likely to reach the top of the dipstick.

make sure your running 20-50 oil for the pressure. might help the other also, the valve cover gaskets you have to pull the upper intake. and don't buy the cork ones buy the expensive reusable rubber/steel felpros
